Endovenous Ablation (EVA)

Endovenous Ablation (EVA) is the most effective, non-surgical treatment for varicose veins.

This procedure is an advanced alternative to traditional surgery, allowing you to return to normal life quickly.

What is Endovenous Ablation (EVA)?

Endovenous Ablation (EVA) involves inserting a thin catheter into the diseased vein under ultrasound guidance. Once in place, controlled heat (radiofrequency energy) is applied to the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut. The body naturally reroutes blood through healthy veins, reducing both cosmetic and medical concerns.

Endovenous Ablation (EVA) is an up-to-date, non-surgical solution to treat your varicose veins, so you don’t have to put up with your symptoms or be embarrassed to show off your legs anymore.

  • EVA is performed under local anaesthetic, thus avoiding the unnecessary risk of general anaesthetic
  • A “walk in, walk out” technique and you can return to work the same day if you wish

How does Endovenous Ablation (EVA) work?

Following a small injection of local anaesthetic, we pass a radiofrequency fibre into the affected vein, which is used to internally cauterise and close the vein.

Ultrasound is used to guide the fibre to the exact spot to start treatment. Further local anaesthetic is placed around the vein to ensure that the procedure is painless.

The fibre is slowly withdrawn, destroying the varicose vein. The treated vein immediately scars shut and will naturally be absorbed into the body within six to twelve months.

EVA usually needs to be augmented with Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy to the remaining varicose veins in your lower legs or thighs, which may also improve any spider veins you may have. We will guide you through this process as well, in order to help you make the best decisions for your needs.

What does it include?

  • A detailed ultrasound to confirm treatment suitability.
  • Local anaesthetic to ensure comfort.
  • Catheter-guided closure of the targeted vein.
  • Post-procedure compression to support recovery.

Am I suitable?

EVA is suitable if you:

  • Suffer from symptomatic varicose veins.
  • Have veins confirmed by ultrasound as incompetent.
  • Prefer a minimally invasive option with fast recovery.

Benefits & Results

  • Effective closure of problem veins.
  • Relief from heaviness, aching, or swelling.
  • No surgical cuts or stitches.
  • Long-lasting results with low recurrence rates.

Risks & Considerations

Side effects may include bruising, tightness, or skin numbness near the treated vein. Rare risks include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or infection. Our team ensures all safety protocols are followed.

After treatment you will need to wear compression stockings day and night for the first week, and then just during the day for another one to two weeks for maximum effectiveness, depending on how extensive your varicose veins are.

We recommend a 30 to 60 minute walk every day for the first four weeks, and you should avoid strenuous exercise for two to three weeks after treatment.
