What is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid (HA) – a substance that naturally occurs in the body and helps to hydrate and plump the skin.

As we age, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, leading to sagging, hollowness, and wrinkles. By carefully placing dermal filler under the skin, we can restore volume, improve contours, and reduce the appearance of lines and folds in areas such as cheeks, jawline, temple and chin.

Hyaluranon is a carbohydrate that is naturally present in the skin but declines with age. It promotes skin hydration and collagen formation.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane® and Belotero® are a highly effective way to improve facial sagging, short of surgery.

We also offer non-hyaluranon fillers Sculptra® and Radiesse®, which are offered by Skin Institute Appearance Medicine Doctors.

Who is suitable?

Dermal fillers are suitable for adults who want to:

• Restore facial volume lost with age
• Enhance features such as lips, cheeks, or jawline
• Smooth out deeper lines, folds, or shadows
• Achieve a fresher, more youthful look without surgery

Dermal fillers may not be suitable if any of the below apply. Suitability is always confirmed during your consultation.

• Those previously allergic to hyaluranon
• Pregnant or breast-feeding
• Those with permanent fillers or facial implants
• Unwell with a cold, sinusitis or facial infection
• Prior keloid scarring
• Less than a month after deep skin resurfacing
• Planned dental treatment in a month or flying overseas in under four days

Caution is needed in those with autoimmune disorders.

What to expect (during & after)

During:

Treatment usually takes 30-60 minutes. Dermal filler is injected beneath the skin using fine needles or cannulas.

After:

Some mild swelling, redness, or bruising can occur but usually settles within a few days. Results are immediate, though final outcomes are best assessed once any swelling has resolved.
